Microsoft reveals the environmental impact of the underwater data center

Microsoft released some late-breaking information about Project Natick earlier this morning. Microsoft said an underwater data center is a more sustainable approach that actually improves the data center’s performance and reliability compared to land. After reading Microsoft’s report, we asked Microsoft about the environmental impact of Project Natick in the ocean. Specifically, we asked if Microsoft had studied the effects of the surrounding underwater environment after Project Natick deployed. Microsoft responded that Project Natick will have a negligible impact on the marine life.

Here is Microsoft̵

7;s full answer:

Natick uses raw seawater for cooling, with the water returned to the ocean a fraction of a degree warmer than ambient temperature. Due to the rapid mixing of ocean currents, the influence of temperature cannot be detected just a few meters downstream of the data center. We used cameras on the outside of the ship to monitor wildlife during the mission. We found that the data center was an attractive location for marine life and was quickly colonized by multiple species of fish and other marine life.

Two years underwater allowed a thin layer of algae and barnacles to form, and sea anemones to grow to the size of a cantaloupe in the sheltered corners of their ballasted base
