Microsoft is redesigning its Cortana assistant and announces that it will shut down the current iOS and Android apps, end Cortana support for the Harman Kardon Invoke smart speaker, and the original Cortana functionality from the Surface headphones of the first in 2021 Generation to remove.
These changes are still a few months away, but it’s another big step for Microsoft to avert Cortana from a Google Assistant or Alexa alternative to a more specialized, productivity-oriented assistant – changes the company has already made to the Windows 10 version from Cortana earlier this year. (To this end, Microsoft scheduled an appointment on September 7 for the previously announced sunset of third-party Cortana knowledge for Windows.)
Instead, Microsoft will focus on its productivity features that reuse Cortana as part of the Microsoft 365 software suite, and use the revised Windows 1
Microsoft is also offering a $ 50 gift card consolation offer to Harman Kardon Invoke owners most affected by Cortana removal. This effectively turns the formerly intelligent device into an expensive Bluetooth speaker when the firmware update arrives next year. Owners of the original Surface headphones (who are also deprived of the Cortana experience) will also be offered a gift card worth $ 25 to make up for the lack of service.
