Microsoft’s Surface Solo concept is based on the design of “Duo”, but has a conventional form factor

Microsoft recently launched its Surface Duo smartphone, which has been in the news since last year. The dual-screen smartphone from Microsoft is said to still be limited in its functionality compared to seamlessly foldable smartphones from Samsung. However, it has its own quirks and improvements that work across Android. If you’re not a fan of the Surface Duo design, a designer came up with a concept for the single-display device called the Surface Solo. Interested? Let’s check it out.

The new Microsoft Surface Solo features a single-frame design with a traditional form factor – would you buy it?

As mentioned earlier, designer Jonas Daehnert, known on Twitter as @PhoneDesigner, shared concept images of the Surface Solo and revealed what each screen would look like. Surface Duo can be used as a phone with a screen if you open it up and attach a screen to the back. However, the aspect ratio and overall symmetry of the phone are compromised and it doesn’t look pleasant at all. It’s wider than usual.

The Surface Solo design concept has a traditional or regular aspect ratio as it has a single screen instead of two individual panels. Note that the designer gets its design elements from Microsoft devices. Aside from the form factor and design, the Surface Solo has a pretty thin profile. The side button and the side-mounted fingerprint scanner are pretty familiar.

Microsoft’s Surface Duo is undoubtedly an interesting device, and the thin profile is pretty good in my opinion. There’s room for innovation as Android has been pushed to work better with dual-screen smartphones. The hinge mechanism, based on reviews, is sturdy and well built, adjustable with each setting. It opens up a new niche for the industry and apps to follow the dual screen approach. For more pictures, see the entire thread of the tweet.

I would definitely want the Surface Solo to see natural light in the future as the overall concept is pretty neat. What do you think of the Surface Solo concept? Let us know in the comments.
