Motorola jumps into foldable phones. And it's probably one of the industry's best known names.

Motorola, a unit of Chinese consumer electronics giant Lenovo, plans to sell its foldable smartphone in the summer, according to a person familiar with the company's plans. The person said the design would be different than the Samsung Galaxy Fold debuted last week, or the Huawei Mate X which was shown on Sunday at the MWC show in Barcelona

The device is most likely a revival of the Razr brand, which would return for $ 1,500, according to The Wall Street Journal. Engadget confirmed on Wednesday that the phone would come.

The summer launch will mark the onset of the Galaxy Fold, which is scheduled for April 26, and the Mate X, which will start around the middle of the year, and further underscores the burgeoning trend of folding phones. The devices brought tons of buzz and there was talk of a revived MWC at a time when interest in cell phones was maturing.

Unlike the Galaxy Fold or Mate X, which folds into larger displays, the Razr design is based on schematics from a patent application that was discovered by the blog 91Mobiles, into a smaller device like the original by Razr

transformed. If it mimics the original phone, it is also much more compact. However, it is unclear whether consumers want to fold their ad. Samsung and Huawei rely on people who prefer the option of a larger display.

The original by Razr was one of the most well-known brands and has driven Motorola's success during the flip-phone era for many years. The ultra-thin phone initially launched at the then unbelievable price of $ 500 as the exclusive phone for Cingular Wireless (now AT & T). It was one of the most successful phones in history and sold more than 50 million units within two years.

However, Motorola failed to take advantage of the Razr's success and continued to decline as the industry switched to more sophisticated smartphones. Google bought Motorola in 2012, and later sold it to Lenovo two years later .

Lenovo now has the opportunity to rekindle the Motorola brand with the Razr.
