Nintendo’s bank account is still growing in 2020. Sales of the company’s Switch consoles soared year over year, causing the system to outperform the aging Xbox One and PlayStation 4. The Nintendo Switch, however, outperformed its competition at historic levels, according to industry tracking company The NPD Group, it also sees record sales and system sales.
“Hardware spending rose 37% year over year to $ 229 million in August 2020,” said NPD analyst Mat Piscatella. “Nintendo Switch set a new record for hardware sales in US dollars in August, surpassing US dollar sales for the Nintendo Wii in August 2008. The sales volume of Nintendo Switch units has more than doubled compared to the previous year. “
This is obviously good news for Nintendo. Thanks to its strong software library like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Mario Odyssey, gaming fans are still rushing to get the system in their hands. These games continue to sell, and they will continue to sell the Switch even after Nintendo first-party releases have slowed slightly due to the pandemic. You can find the August software report of the NPD here.
“Year-to-date hardware spending increased 23 percent year over year to $ 2 billion,” Piscatella said.
Consumers are still hungry for hardware, even if the economy continues to suffer during the US pandemic. While you and I may struggle to purchase new consoles, a large group of Americans have a lot of money and few ways to spend it. This should ensure that the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 perform well this vacation.
While Nintendo Switch dominated hardware, accessories set their own record
If you want more evidence that people are still willing to spend money on gaming products, take a look at the Accessories category.
“Spending on accessories hit a record $ 166 million in August, up 42 percent year over year,” Piscatella said. “Year-to-date spending rose 26 percent to an all-time high of $ 1.4 billion.”
There are few people left who want a console and haven’t bought an Xbox One or PlayStation 4 yet. But this audience is ready and waiting for the next generation. And really – they don’t even wait. They spend their entertainment budget improving their current game settings with new gamepads and headsets.
“Spending on gamepad, headset / headphones, and steering wheel set new sales records for August and the current year in the US,” said Piscatella. “The PS4 DualShock 4 Wireless Controller Black was the top-selling accessory in August, while the Xbox Elite Series 2 Wireless Controller was the top-selling accessory year to date.”
Outside of the first-party platform companies, Turtle Beach and Logitech were big winners in August.
“The top-selling headset in both August and 2020 was the Xbox One Ear Force Recon 70 Gaming Headset – Black from Turtle Beach,” said Piscatella. “The Logitech G920 Driving Force road bike for Xbox One was the top-selling steering wheel in both August 2020 and this year to date.”
Microsoft and Sony have both confirmed that most current accessories will work on Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. However, the DualShock 4 will not work with PS5 games.
