The Switch broke sales records in August when Zelda: Breath Of The Wild becomes the 10th largest Nintendo game of all time in America.

While the next generation of Xbox and PlayStation consoles are just around the corner, the Nintendo Switch is the best-selling piece of hardware right now as new numbers come out for the US.

This year, with the ins and outs of the pandemic and the success of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Nintendo had the best August ever in the US. Switch sales more than doubled compared to August 201

9 – and it’s not like things will go bad then.

The previous record for highest hardware sales of all time in August was also set by Nintendo with the Wii in 2008, but unfortunately the NPD chart trackers won’t publish specific numbers for either year.

As if that wasn’t enough, Nintendo games made up exactly half of the top 20 best-selling games in the US in August.

One of them was Zelda: Breath Of The Wild, which according to NPD is the 10th best-selling Nintendo game in US history.

This is more of an achievement than it may seem at first, because despite the consistent critical recognition, Zelda was never a particularly big seller.

The current sales for Breath Of The Wild is a little more than 20 million worldwide, while the next most successful entry is Ocarina Of Time at 13.22 million.

Ironically, despite all that, there were no Nintendo games in the top 3 in August, with EA dominating the top two with the new releases Madden NFL 21 and EA Sports UFC 4.

Sports games (and Mortal Kombat) are one of the few areas where the US and UK charts tend to differ, although there are no weekly US charts to make direct comparisons.
