“What kind of song is that that goes laaaa, laaa, la la la laaa?”
If you’ve ever asked a question like this – and I think most of us are, at some point – Google has a new feature to help you out.
Starting today, iOS and Android users can find a song by simply summing the corresponding melody in the Google app or the search widget.
Just tap the microphone icon and say “What kind of song is this?” and start humming for 10-15 seconds. No lyrics, artist names, or anything else required – just probably not completely deaf.
Google will then show you the most likely options based on your dulcimer tunes.
It works with the Google Assistant as well, though it’s not yet clear if it’s available on smart speakers and displays.
If you ask me, this is possibly the most revolutionary AI feature Google has implemented to date, provided it works decently. After all, I don’t have to suffer from another abandoned earwig whose name or text I can’t remember.
The feature is part of a series of AI updates rolled out to Google Search today. You can find more information on this in Google’s blog post here.
