O2 and Ericsson apologize for a 4G service outage for millions of smartphones

Mobile network operator O2 announced on Friday that its data networks had been restored after millions of smartphones in the UK and Japan were offline yesterday (via BBC ).

A statement on its website said that the 4G network is finally working again after being hit at around 5:30 GMT Thursday.

Earlier, mobile operator Ericsson said that an expired certificate was the reason for the failure, which also caused problems in some other countries. Marielle Lindgren, head of Ericsson, said the "faulty software" that caused the problems was decommissioned.

Both O2 and Ericsson apologized to millions of customers affected by the incident. "I want to let our customers know how sorry I am that the impact of our network data has been very strong on them, and I can assure them that our teams with Ericsson do everything we can to do," O2 boss said Mark Evans. "We really appreciate that this was a bad experience and we are really sorry."

O2 belongs to the Spanish Telefonica and has after the British telecommunications subsidiary EE on the second largest mobile network in the UK.

The company said that voice calls were not affected by the issue, but some O2 customers said they could not make calls or send text messages even though they had mobile coverage.

The failure also had a knock-on effect for other services using the O2 network, such as Transport for London's electronic timetable service at bus stops, which did not work much of Thursday. e, v, n, t, s) {if (f.fbq) return: n = f.fbq = function () {n.callMethod?
