Today, CEO Pete Lau of MWC Barcelona presented OnePlus an initiative to promote apps for 5G networks. The timing is right too. With the introduction of 5G around the world this year, network operators, phone manufacturers and consumers need to develop a killer app for the massive increase in speed that 5G offers. Basically, OnePlus asks for support in developing applications for 5G.
OnePlus sees in the long run a lack of imagination around 5G. In a panel, CEO Pete Lau said he does not believe that people have thought enough about how 5G can change life in the long term.
This contest will select 20 finalists to receive OnePlus devices. The winners will receive a trip to OnePlus Headquarters, access to 5G test labs and support from Oneplus and EE.
Such a competition took place around the launch of 4G as mobile device manufacturers wanted to strengthen apps marketplaces. But 5G apps may be a little different from 4G apps because much of the processing is moved to a central data center instead of being on the device.
The promise of 5G is almost there, but it requires initiatives and programs OnePlus should help consumers understand the possibilities.
Earlier this week, OnePlus, along with almost every other handset manufacturer, introduced a 5G device.
