OnePlus promised us this year a 5G handset. At the Mobile World Congress this week, the company was somehow delivered. Unlike other 5G devices featured at the show, however, the company's offering is still in the prototype phase – much like behind protective glass where all the interesting parts are hidden because it's not officially official.
The product was featured at the Qualcomm booth this week as OnePlus' presence at the show was mainly limited to closed doors. For the chip maker, this was an opportunity to show once again how pervasive its technology has become in the vast sea of Android devices.
Based on the release plans of the past, we could expect OnePlus to officially launch its next phone in the summer. The past release cycles have also been upgraded in recent years, even though the company has changed a bit as it continues to grow and find its best place in the broader mobile phone market.
This particular device, probably the OnePlus 7, is expected to be released in the second quarter, although unfortunately its 5G variant 2018 will not be released in the US.
The addition of 5G in 2019 shows that OnePlus is now getting more innovative approach to the release cycle, rather than holding back to lower the price of the technology.
