PlayStation celebrates its 25th anniversary on Tuesday. What began as a failed peripheral to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System has become a massive powerhouse for the industry. Now, Sony has been awarded a Guinness World Record for being the best-selling brand for home video game consoles in history, and the numbers are downright stunning.
On Twitter, the official PlayStation account revealed that between the original system, the PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, the brand has sold more than 450 million units. We know that the PS4 alone sold more than 1
The strong sales are no coincidence, since Sony has built up a strong list of first-time vendors as well as good relationships with outsiders developers almost immediately. This led to games such as Metal Gear Solid Resident Evil 2 Final Fantasy VII Kingdom Hearts and Grand Theft Auto on the platforms, making them makes it extremely tempting for players, even if they are competing with other consoles that may offer more performance or additional features. It has found a particularly strong grip over the life of the PlayStation 4, with more support from third-party vendors than Microsoft and a focus on gaming alone at a time when competitors were giving a broader network to television and other forms of entertainment.

It's worth noting that the Guinness World Record applies to the # 1 selling console brand as PlayStation was not as successful at entering handheld territories. The PSP was moderately successful, but the PlayStation Vita did not do much, despite excellent exclusive games such as Uncharted: Golden Abyss and Killzone: Mercenary . It's unlikely we'll find a follower, especially as game streaming technology means we can now play home console games right on our phones.
The world record of Sony should be even bigger in the next few years. In late 2020, the PlayStation 5 will be released, a console that supports 8K resolution and raytracing technology. It will once again compete with the Microsoft Xbox in the form of Project Scarlett and the Nintendo Switch.
