If you have a large online following, as well as knowledge that could be valuable to that audience, Prox is a startup that is currently in beta testing and developing tools to make money.
Michael Mathieu, former CEO of YuMe, joined Prox as CEO in January. The goal, he told me, is to create a whole range of back office tools for experts and influencers. However, the company initially offers an easy way to have one-on-one video sessions with fans and knowledge seekers. ”
“People who influence social media and YouTube don’t control this customer,” said Mathieu. “It’s a YouTube customer, so if you want to make money, it’ll come from some of the YouTube advertising revenue.”
Hence, Prox is designed to help these experts make money more directly with anyone who wants to connect with them and understand that audience. Mathieu suggested that needs intensified during the pandemic. More and more experts and developers asked, “How can I connect with my audience in more meaningful ways, have multiple sources of income, and actually have a good view of who they are?”
Nicole Healy, director of customer success, said that many of the “professionals” using Prox are “published writers looking for another connection point.”
The Prox team gave me a tour of the platform, both by the knowledge seeker and the professional. It looks pretty easy when someone tries to schedule a meeting with a professional and then get into a video call. The knowledge seeker controls the meeting agenda, but the professional can also check dates and topics in advance and set their own prices for the value of their time. (Product manager Matt Coalson said some pros could ask for $ 150 for a 15-minute call.)
After that, both the knowledge seeker and the professional can rate the experience and schedule follow-up calls if it went well. Prox also provides analysis for professionals on the types of feedback and the most frequently asked questions.
I’ve already written about Superpeer, another startup that helps influencers and experts make money one-on-one, but when I brought it up, Mathieu suggested that the competitive landscape is much broader and influencers have access to a range of tools for marketing and monetization.
“We are positioning ourselves compared to the competition in such a way that we are really designed to offer this professional added value,” he said. “It’s not just about this platform – video, audio, reviews, which has significant value, but our goal is to provide the level above to essentially give the professional a roadmap: When you’re at Prox and you are If you do these two or three things, you will make ten times more money. “
