Bloomberg reports that Sony will manufacture around 4 million fewer PlayStation 5 systems in the current fiscal year. This is a production cut due to a weakened supply chain that ships the console’s motherboard.
Sony now expects around 11 million units, Bloomberg said, citing sources familiar with the company’s plans. Those sources said that the PS5’s custom silicon production yields dropped to just 50%. These returns have improved, but not stabilized at a reliable level.
Sony planned to manufacture 5 to 6 million PS5s in April, according to Bloomberg’s internal plans. But the company more than doubled those plans after a summer when the quarantine lifestyle pushed its PlayStation Plus subscriptions to record levels and generated huge sales on first-party exclusives The last of us Part 2 and Spirit of Tsushima.
