A senior advisor said they are speaking to Russia for more information on the vaccine, studies and next steps.
The World Health Organization says the vaccine approved by Russia this week will not be among the nine under consideration in the advanced stages of testing.
WHO and its partners have included nine experimental COVID-19 vaccines in an investment mechanism that countries are encouraged to join, called the Covax facility. The initiative allows countries to invest in multiple vaccines for early access and in theory to provide funding for developing countries.
“We do not currently have enough information to make a judgment on the vaccine against Russia,”
“We are currently in discussion with Russia for additional information to understand the status of this product, the trials that have been carried out and the next steps.”
This week, President Vladimir Putin announced that Russia had approved a coronavirus vaccine that had not yet completed advanced human studies, claiming the vaccine would protect people for up to two years with no evidence.
