Some people were a little surprised that the Samsung Galaxy Watch 2 was not presented when the Galaxy S20 launched on February 11th. At the time of writing, it was a long time since the original Galaxy Watch came on the market, and smartwatch fans were hoping for a new iteration. The lack of the device is not only understandable, but was also expected.
The Samsung Galaxy Watch was launched in late 2018, and before that, the Samsung Gear S3 came on the market in late 2016. So it's clear that the company is using two-year cycles with its smartwatches and releasing them at the end of the year, away from its unpacked event and towards the release of the Galaxy Note.
That means we could see the release of the Samsung Galaxy Watch 2 in late 2020. Exactly when we would also expect the Apple Watch 6 to be released. Since the original Galaxy Watch and Apple Watch 5 are currently number 1
We're not going to say that the Samsung Galaxy Watch 2 will definitely appear in competition with the Apple Watch 6 in late 2020 as there is a placeholder in the mix.
Confusion with the Samsung Galaxy Watch
The Samsung Gear Sport was released in early 2017 and the Galaxy Watch Active in early 2019, so there seemed to be a similar half-yearly pattern … until the Galaxy Watch Active 2 appeared in late 2019 the market came, broke this schedule and brought wind to the market.
Therefore, we cannot really predict what Samsung has planned for the Gear Watch Active 3 or what the next sport-oriented smartwatch is called. Unless the Watch Active 2 is a placeholder, the release date of the next version may be at any time, possibly late 2020, which may result in the Galaxy Watch 2 having a different release date.
Name us creatures of habit But tech media can be pretty big fans of the regular annual release schedule when it comes to phones, tablets, and wearables, and Samsung is usually pretty good for a recurring pattern. For this reason, we still hope for Galaxy Watch 2 to be released before the end of 2020 (and also because the original is now aging slightly), regardless of what the Watch Active series has to say about it.
So if you are in the market for a great new smartwatch, you may want to wait until the end of the year – although that's a long wait from February we start writing, and you get a lot of calls and calls in the meantime miss potential steps being followed.
