As the 12th major release in the Assassin’s Creed franchise, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla appears to be similar to newer titles, but has seen significant changes to how combat, exploration, and items work. This page highlights many ways Valhalla changed the formula, especially from Assassin’s Creed Origins and Odyssey ̵

  • Similar to Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, players can choose between a female or male version of Eivor to play as. However, since the story has no siblings, players can switch between the two versions at any time without affecting the story.
  • A greater focus has been placed on the main story of Valhalla, which includes the journey from Norway to England and the takeover of the kingdoms within by forging alliances. Because of this, Valhalla will not feature the same type of open side quest arcs and different quests that are present in Odyssey. Instead, there will be shorter and more diverse “world events” that can be found in each of the areas.
  • Most of your main progress begins with forging new alliances on the Alliance map in your settlement, as this will give you access to new areas and the quests necessary to win them over to your side.
  • While the exact extent of choice and consequence is unknown, there are several ways to solve specific objectives – which can result in certain factions becoming allies or enemies.
  • Participating in the activity known as Flying can increase your charisma and unlock new unique dialogue options when you are at the right level.
  • The Assassins’ battle against the Templars can still be seen to some extent, although Eivor is not immediately part of the Assassins, she will meet those known as “The Hidden” and help them defeat the opponents known as “The Order” the old “

  • For the first time in a long time in the series, the player will have a “home base” in the form of a Viking settlement called Ravensthorpe, which was established shortly after you arrived in England. This settlement has a ton of new features as you can build new structures that will give you new features and opportunities that are new to the series.
  • While initially small, players can add new structures and cosmetics to the settlement and expand its functions – including a stable, blacksmith, barracks, cartographer, merchant, and more.
  • The players have the opportunity to have large festivals to celebrate their Viking exploits. This grants Eivor bonuses and can be improved by building certain structures in the settlement.
  • The legendary hunts found in Odyssey are now part of the hunting lodge function and will reward you for facing these mythical beasts.
  • A fishing hut can be built to introduce the fishing line, allowing Eivor to take part in a fishing mini-game to source rare fish that can be exchanged for rewards.
  • Many merchandise found by animals now have value beyond sales – including handing them over to the hunter’s lodge for exclusive rewards.
  • The Seers Hut, which can be built, allows Eivor to experience visions of Norse mythology and to travel to places like Asgard and Jotunheim.
  • At a tattoo and barber shop, you can customize the look and feel of Eivor with new unlockable tattoos that can be applied to multiple body parts, as well as different hairstyles and colors. Some of these designs are available for purchase; others need to be found.

  • While combat is similar to what was experienced in Assassin’s Creed Origins and Odyssey, there have been some significant changes for certain mechanics.
  • The hidden blade has returned and can be used for familiar stealth takedowns – but it doesn’t have the magical abilities that the spear had in Odyssey. However, with the right skill, you can use a quick time event to do more damage to stronger targets.
  • Both Eivor and her horse now have stamina knives (blue). Sprinting, dodging, blocking, and delivering heavy punches will lower this counter, although it refills quickly – even more so with successful shots.
  • Enemies have a stun knife (yellow) that is independent of their health. This can be reduced by making certain movements – like blocking and countering attacks. When the enemy is completely exhausted, they can make one final move that does incredible damage and usually kills the target.
  • A skill can be unlocked to perform a finisher from a distance.
  • Shields have returned for the first time since Assassin’s Creed Origins and, like other weapons, can be used with two weapons.
  • Many types of weapons have an optional heavy attack – like fast striking with an off-hand weapon or turning with a two-hand weapon.
  • Certain enemies are now telegraphing some of their attacks to give you a clue on how to react – bosses in particular. Orange lights mean the attack can be parried to anger them, while flashing red means the attack cannot be blocked.
  • When aiming a bow, players will now see orange glowing spots on a random part of an enemy indicating a weak spot – that can be hit to cause massive damage and stun enemies.
  • Raiding certain areas is now essential to amass the supplies needed to build your settlement. When you call for a raid, your Viking allies will be used to attack and loot specific locations. This allows you to take away supplies that cannot be extracted alone.
  • Given the relatively small size of Viking longships, sea combat has taken a back seat – and your longship is now mainly used to transport you and your Viking crew to other areas to raid.


  • The equipment has been overhauled by Origins and Odyssey and is no longer maintained at the frequency that it was used in earlier. Valhalla’s system prioritizes quality and upgrading from a smaller set over the larger amount found in previous games.
  • Each piece of equipment is geared towards one of three types – bear (red), raven (yellow) or wolf (blue). The alignment of your gear can determine what bonuses it gets from skills you’ve invested in.
  • Different bow types include different types of ammunition, as well as different rates of fire and power.
  • Each weapon has its own ability – like increasing critical damage or speed on successful hits.
  • All armor is now available in sets and offers special bonuses for wearing a full set.
  • Collector runes can be inserted similar to engravings, but must first be purchased or found in the world and can be exchanged.
  • The equipment can be upgraded by Eivor up to a certain threshold. To improve the quality even further, they have to be improved at the blacksmith’s.
  • Upgrading the equipment can be done a few times, changing the visual appearance of the equipment and the number of runes that can be equipped.
  • While some pieces of equipment can be purchased, much of it is now in special chests hidden around the world.

  • While the map in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is much smaller compared to Odyssey and Origins, changes have been made to allow more activities and sights to be discovered.
  • Instead of the various camps, forts, and other locations that included a checklist of destinations and collectibles, the sights in Valhalla will be much freer and more casual. Targets and collectibles are now marked with color-coded glowing dots that represent caches of wealth, mysteries with events and activities, and collectable artifacts.
  • Horses can now be trained to swim in order to cross the many rivers in England.
  • Your raven will no longer be able to mark targets while in flight, but can help you pinpoint the locations of various types of collectibles and POIs.
  • Areas now indicate their power with a number compared to Origins and Odyssey, and now display the amount of wealth, mysteries and artifacts that you can get across the area.
  • Your longship can be used to cross the rivers of England and can be set to a marked point using the autopilot, much like your horse can.
  • Social stealth has returned in a way, and Eivor can blend in with exploring cities where guards would consider them suspicious. This can include meddling with monks, sitting on benches, and other activities.
  • Certain areas contain treasure behind closed doors and you will have to find the keys in different ways.
  • Wandering armored hunters named Zealots have replaced Odyssey’s mercenaries and can visit Eivor and her clan at certain points. They are often extremely tough as they roam the streets of England and while they are not immediately hostile, they may seek you out based on certain decisions you need to make and the notoriety you are building up.

  • Both abilities and skills have been changed from how they were presented in Origins and Odyssey and are now much more different.
  • Skills that can be activated either in melee or ranged combat and cost adrenaline are no longer obtained by leveling up and are only unlocked when the required book of knowledge has been found.
  • Certain knowledge books can also improve the ability a second time and give it new functions.
  • Passive or active skills that don’t require adrenaline have now been moved to a large skill tree and can be unlocked as you progress through different constellations of skills.
  • Skills such as safe trap trapping, chain murder, and guided arrow shooting are no longer part of your assignable skills and are now unlocked in different parts of the skill tree.
  • Larger, more important skills are nested between smaller incremental improvements to damage, speed, defense, and so on. Some skills will also improve your stats if you have the right kind of geared gear. You can also find adrenaline upgrades in some parts of the skill tree.
  • As you level up, you only get extra skill points that you can spend. As you gain more skills, you can only increase your total strength – as measured by the total strength of an enemy or territory.
