Before the credits roll, we return to the malicious Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) on the Back to where he landed after the film's last battle (possibly a reference for the Mushroom Hill Zone of Sonic the Hedgehog 3). After 87 days in the bleak world, it looks a bit messy.
"My understanding for mental health remains absolute! "says Robotnik in a tone that suggests otherwise.
He also talks to a rock on which the face of his henchman is painted – a literal Agent Stone – and shaves his head.
"I'll be home by Christmas," he exclaims.
What it means
Robotnik will return and rock his classic video game look with a bald mustache (a shot that was inexplicably spoiled by the first trailer last April).
In the middle of the credits a huge ring portal opens on a cliff outside of Green Hills, Montana, which brings an anthropomorphic double-tailed fox to earth: Sonics long-time video game buddy Tails.
"I. I hope I'm not too late," says Tails before flying towards the city with his rotating tails.
What It Means
We don't know what he's talking about, but it's possible tails know about an afterlife threat to Sonic. After all, he was hiding on Earth to escape nameless villains who wanted to use his speed forces, and it is likely that his very public battle with Robotnik made them aware of his location.
Tails (real name Miles Prower, a lame pun) became a video game icon after appearing in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in 1992. Since then he's been Sonic's buddy and his humility contrasts with Sonic's high spirits.
There is nothing after the credits – I think they'll save Knuckles the Echidna for the end of the sequel, or he'll be the threat that comes after Sonic – so you can go home or turn the movie off after doing Tails have seen.
