Sony confirms initial PS5 lineup and free upgrade plans for PS4 titles

Sony has confirmed its first-time PlayStation 5 lineup, as well as some details on PS4 versions of its exclusive titles and how the transition from current to next generation will work. On Aug. November, six launch titles confirmed for PS5.

Here is the full list, including pricing and first-time confirmation that Sony intends to increase the price of some exclusive titles by $ 10 to a maximum of $ 69.99:

  • Astros playroom (Japan Studio) – pre-installed on PS5
  • Demon souls (Bluepoint Games / Japan Studio) ̵
    1; $ 69.99
  • Destruction All Stars (Lucid Games / XDEV) – $ 69.99
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales – $ 49.99
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man: Mile Morales Ultimate Edition – $ 69.99
  • Sackboy A great adventure (Sumo Digital / XDEV) – $ 59.99

It’s important to note that this list doesn’t include expected multi-platform games, such as: Fourteen days (confirmed for PS5 and Xbox One X at launch) and the annual standard release titles like the new one call of Duty and Assassin’s Creed Games that should both be released before or shortly after the next-gen consoles launch in November. CD project Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 will also be confirmed for cross-gen releases on November 19th, just a week after the PS5 officially shipped.

Sony has also confirmed that at least some of these games will include PS4 versions. It’s the first time the company has committed to releasing cross-gen titles after some speculation that it would limit most, if not all, of its first-party games to the PS5. The games that feature cross-genre releases don’t just include Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Sackboy A great adventure, but also the coming ones Horizon Zero Dawn episode Horizon forbidden west. This game doesn’t have a release date after 2021, but it’s comforting to know that PS4 owners who can’t make the jump to PS5 will still be able to enjoy it at launch.

Sony hasn’t announced a free upgrade yet, much like Microsoft’s Smart Delivery program, which promises that all first-party Xbox One games and a growing list of third-party games will be upgraded to X / S versions of the Xbox series for free receive. However, Sony’s blog post notes that the above cross-gen versions will get free upgrades whether you have the standard or digital PS5.

Here is Sony’s full description of the process:

Additionally, we know that the PS4 community will switch to PS5 at different times and we are excited to announce PS4 versions of some of our exclusive products. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Sackboy A Big Adventure and Horizon Forbidden West will also be released on PS4. While these three games are designed to take advantage of the PS5 and its unique next-generation features like the ultra-high-speed SSD and DualSense controller, PS4 owners can enjoy these experiences at launch too. The digital PS4 versions of the launch games include a free upgrade for both PS5 consoles, while the PS4 disc versions of these games include a free upgrade for the PS5 with an Ultra HD Blu-Ray drive.

This last phrase is a bit vague; “The PS4 disc versions of these games include a free upgrade for the PS5” seems to imply that players who own disc versions of for example Spiderman: Miles Morales for PS4 will get a digital upgrade to the PS5 when they buy the new console. But it’s not entirely clear right now and we will have to wait for more specific details from Sony on how exactly the transition from a disc version of a PS4 game to the PS5 will work.
