Sony Electronics shows spatial reality display

Sony Electronics Inc. today announced the debut of the Spatial Reality Display (SR Display), a groundbreaking new product made with Sony’s award-winning Eye-Sensing Light Field Display (ELFD) technology.

The display, which was originally shared with attendees at the Consumer Electronics Show in January of this year, does not require virtual reality glasses or a headset. The SR display enables developers in a variety of industries, from automotive and industrial design to computer graphics (CG) and visual effects (VFX) designers and developers, as well as filmmakers, to bring ideas to life in stunning 3D displays.

“We are excited to bring the world̵

7;s best technology to the table and advance the design and creation industry, especially as we move to digital,” said Mike Fasulo, president and chief operating officer, Sony Electronics North America. “This technology creates new versatility and enables us to offer designers and developers everywhere a completely new medium and experience.”Exceptional 3D image quality
The Spatial Reality Display uses spatial reality to combine the virtual and physical world, creating an incredible 3D optical experience that is visible to the naked eye. This is made possible by various technologies:

  • High-speed vision sensor – The SR display is based on an innovative high-speed vision sensor, which simultaneously tracks the exact eye position in space on vertical, horizontal and depth axes. The display monitors eye movement down to the millisecond and immediately renders the image based on the position and position of the viewer’s eyes. In this way, developers can interact with their designs from any angle without glasses in a highly realistic 3D virtual environment.
  • Real-time rendering algorithm – In addition, the SR-Display uses an original processing algorithm to display content in real time. This allows the stereoscopic image to appear as smooth as real life even when the viewer is moving.
  • Micro-optic lens – The micro-optic lens is located just above the impressive 15.6-inch LCD (Diag.) Display. This lens divides the image into the left and right eyes and enables stereoscopic viewing only with the naked eye.

Workflow integration with Sony’s software development kit
Sony’s dedicated SDK makes it easy for designers to create content for the SR Display.4 The SDK is compatible with industry-standard Unity and Unreal Engine tools, so developers can work in an already familiar production environment and interactively develop applications in the areas of gaming, VR, Construction and automotive design. Applications for content creators in various industries
For filmmakers, graphic artists, engineers and product designers in companies and industry, the state-of-the-art visual 3D technology of the SR display offers a futuristic yet extremely practical visual experience in which detailed colors, textures, contrasts and brightness merge a new medium for image- , Character and product design and visualization.2 In the automotive industry, for example, there is the potential to integrate the product early on in the process of developing new vehicle designs in order to improve the quality, speed and the tangibility of the concepts.

“At Volkswagen, we evaluated Sony’s Spatial Reality Display from the start. We see considerable benefits and diverse applications throughout the idea generation and design process and even during the training,” commented Frantisek Zapletal, Virtual Engineering Lab US, Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. “We are excited to continue to break new ground and to work with Sony to find practical use cases for this innovative product at Volkswagen.”

To highlight the capabilities of this cutting-edge technology, Sony Electronics worked with Sony Pictures Entertainment and Columbia Pictures subsidiary Ghost Corps on the upcoming Ghostbusters film, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, due for release in 2021. The collaboration focused on the use of the SR display through the breakthrough visual medium to bring both familiar and new movie characters to life.

“We worked with the Sony team to bring Ghostbusters characters and assets to life using Sony’s Spatial Reality Display,” said Eric Reich, brand and franchise manager, Ghost Corps. “In the future, we’ve seen potential benefits from pre-visualization to 3D modeling. The display offers a new approach to visualizing concepts and signs, making it much easier to understand the finished product.”

Prices and availability
The SR display has a suggested retail price of $ 4,999.99. It will be available to order from Sony and other retailers’ direct e-commerce website from November.
