It took a while, but the time has finally come: Sony is finally ready to present the PS5 again. A “PlayStation 5 Showcase” is planned for Wednesday, September 16, 2020. The announcement was tweeted on September 9th to the PlayStation official Twitter account. The tweet teased images of the PlayStation’s button symbology, as well as glimpses of the DualSense controller, before settling on a console view and most importantly the schedule and web address.

In particular, the PlayStation 5 Showcase tweet made no mention of whether Sony would reveal the price or the exact release date of the console. The accompanying post on the PlayStation blog mentioned “Updates on the latest titles from Worldwide Studios and [Sony’s] World class development partner. “
The news comes just days after Microsoft finally confirmed a price and release date for its new Xbox consoles on November 10th: $ 499 for the more powerful Xbox Series X and a lower price of $ 299 for the less powerful Xbox Series S. for digital use only (which had been described in leaks and rumors prior to confirmation). By this point, both companies had danced on the subject of pricing and release dates and were apparently cautious about announcing first as the holidays approached. Now it’s Sony’s move to take.
Even so, it’s not like nothing was known about the console before the PlayStation 5 Showcase launched, not with the steady trickle of new information Sony has received over the past few months. For example, the PS5 will be available in two versions: with and without a 4K UHD Blu-ray drive. The vehicleless “Digital Edition” PS5 will therefore only be digital (like the Xbox Series S). It will offer very fast SSD (Solid State Drive) storage, which developers say will significantly speed up game loading. It will also be backwards compatible with “the vast majority” of PS4 games (but not PS3, PS2, or PS1 titles, according to Ubisoft). The console is started with Astros playroom, although other announced PS5 titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Horizon: Forbidden West, ratchet and clank: ripped apart have not yet been confirmed for a launch window release (whatever the launch window may be).
The PlayStation 5 Showcase will be streamed on September 16, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. (9:00 p.m. CET, September 17 5:00 a.m. CET) via Twitch and Youtube.
