After a long wait, Spotify has just gone live in India. The Swedish company had sought entry into one of the world's largest music markets, and late Tuesday night, consumers were able to download and use the Spotify app from the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.
It was only yesterday that Spotify was at the entrance to a court order filed by the Warner Music Group with the Bombay High Court. The case prevented Spotify from accessing the Warner / Chappell Music catalog, and the company said it was "the only obstacle to a Spotify launch in India." Although there is no update for the case, fans of the music streaming service were able to download the Spotify app.
Spotify has incorporated some exclusive features for the Indian listeners, which are described in a blog post. The app's recommendation module has been set to propose music in multiple languages, including Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu. This is for Spotify's automatically curated playlists for daily mix, home and radio. In addition, there are new playlists specifically for the Indian public, including Indiestan Rap 91
"With Spotify's growth, we want to bring together millions of artists and billions of fans from all countries and backgrounds. India has an incredibly rich musical culture, and to best serve this market, we are starting a tailor-made experience. Spotify will bring not only Indian artists into the world, but also the music of the world for fans all over India. We have been working towards this goal for a long time and I am looking forward to the start today. Says Daniel Ek, founder and CEO of Spotify.
