The 7 best clothing subscriptions for 2020: men, women, plus sizes and more

You can choose a wardrobe service for several reasons: to spice up your wardrobe, to avoid trying on clothes in the store, to avoid being burned in brick-and-mortar retail stores or just because the ads look cool.

But choosing the right clothing subscription could feel overwhelming. A quick Google search returns dozens of subscriptions to choose from – many you may not have heard of. Although the services ultimately work the same way, everyone has their own unique characteristics.

Choosing a particular service depends on your requirements, style, and budget. The most important thing you should know about these services is that a stylist cannot read your mind. The more information you can provide about what you like (and don't like), the better your experience will be.

We tried different clothing subscriptions. Here are the ones we liked best in 2020.

1; without a membership fee or monthly subscription. My account is linked to one of my Pinterest boards so my stylist can learn more about my preferences, and she always leaves a thoughtful note in my box that is a nice, personal touch. The style cards that come with each box also show different ways of pairing the parts (and often with basic items that are probably already in your closet). However, my advice is not to spend money on an item unless you are sure that you will be wearing it often enough.

Log in online or in the app (available on iOS or Android). Fill out a detailed style profile, including your sizes, whether you loathe it or enjoy shopping, whether you wear heels, what parts of the body you like to show, and more. Stitch Fix offers stylish boxes for men, women and children. You can set a preferred price between $ 25 and $ 500 per item (children's items start at $ 10 per item). I chose the lowest price range when I signed up, and in my last box, none of my line items were over $ 60. You pay a $ 20 styling fee when your box is assembled, you have three days to try on the clothes, and you can return anything you don't want or want. The $ 20 fee applies to everything you keep, and if you don't keep anything, you only pay this fee. If you love your box and keep everything, you'll also get a 25% discount on Buy All.

Even though the average clothing size of a US woman is between 16 and 18, many stores still offer smaller clothing sizes. This can lead to an uncomfortable and discouraging shopping experience.

Dia & Co.'s style service, however, defies the often limited and monotonous choices that make up larger sizes. The service offers sizes 14-32. My box was full of vibrant, colorful items – blouses, dresses, skirts, jeans, and even a clutch. I always have trouble finding jeans that fit my waist and hips, and Dia nailed that. The box also mixed classic pieces, like a polka dot blue wrap dress, with more colorful, patterned pieces that were outside my comfort zone.

To use Dia & Co., first run a style quiz that asks you about your sizes, your typical clothing, your style preferences, and your preferred price range for tops, pants, and dresses. You pay a $ 20 styling fee to have your box assembled. When the box arrives, you can buy what you want and return what you don't want. The $ 20 fee will be charged at checkout for everything you keep. You can order style boxes that best suit your schedule – monthly, bimonthly, or as you wish – as long as you try on the clothes and return them within five days. If you love your box and keep everything, you'll also get a 25% discount on Buy All. There's also a boutique if you're not ready to try an entire box.

If you're new to clothes boxes, Golden Tote may be a good way to tell if you like the process. Every first Monday of the month at 9 a.m., new items are available for the box of your choice, for which no subscription is required. The golden tote bag ($ 149) contains five parts: two that you choose and three surprise items that a stylist chooses. The mini tote bag ($ 59) consists of two parts: one from you and one from the stylist. The surprise bag ($ 89) contains three items selected by a stylist based on your style profile. No subscription to a shopping bag is required here either. Even if you don't want to buy a shopping bag, you can still search for individual items in the boutique.

I was initially worried about the sizes that were only available from XS to L. But with my golden tote bag, it was nice to be able to choose at least some of the pieces that were sent to me, and when my tote came in the mail, I was pleasantly surprised by the content. My advice is to check the new items as soon as possible as the sizes may be out of stock. The clothes selected by the stylist matched my style, but also came out of my comfort zone just enough. The pieces are versatile and can be worn at work, with friends or at home, and even for a date night.

My husband and I both tried The Mr. & Ms. Collection, a subscription service for rental styling. It was a little intimidating at first because the website asked for our stride lengths, the ready-made shirts were numerically sized, and overall there was more fashion terminology, which was a little strange to us. However, the detailed process was worth it. When we got the backpacks, my husband was thrilled with how his jeans fit and that the shirts can be worn at work or at home. The items in my backpack matched my style perfectly, worked together as an outfit and were easy to combine with other pieces in my closet.

You can subscribe to either The Mr. Collection or The Ms. Collection. The service works a little differently than many others. First, log in, select a member package and fill out your style profile. Once you receive the box in the mail, you can hang on the clothes as long as you like and then return them. If you really like something, you can buy it for up to 50% off. After returning your rentals, the service will send your next package and your membership will be renewed monthly.

The Mr. & Ms. Collection has four membership plans that vary based on price, number of items, and shipping speed. The monthly standard box with three items costs $ 59 per month. The monthly premium box contains four items and costs $ 69 per month. A standard unlimited box contains three items and unlimited boxes per month for $ 79. A premium unlimited box contains four items and unlimited boxes per month for $ 89.

A Menlo Club subscription brings together various aspects of men's clothing: clothing, shoes, and sports. As with many other boxes, you first take a style quiz and then receive two items of clothing per month in the mail. The Menlo clothing is casual enough to carry yourself if you're a more subtle dresser. However, the more items you purchase, the more you can put together new outfits and leave your fashionable comfort zone. In addition, the Menlo store, where everyone can shop without an account, often has good sales with designer brands – for example, pants worth $ 58 for $ 10. If you are a member, you get 25% discount in the shop.

My husband's Menlo Club package consisted of dark-washed jeans and a white long-sleeved Henley. His style is very loose, so these items would easily fit in his closet. The jeans would be easy to put on or wear casually. Since he usually wears dark colors, the white was a nice change.

Service membership with Menlo costs $ 60 per month. If you find that this is not for you, you can simply cancel membership (or skip a month). Menlo does not offer package returns, but you can exchange items if something doesn't fit. You can also subscribe to a seasonal membership that delivers a package for $ 75 every three months.

Stylogic is a clothing subscription service that offers women's sizes from 12 to 36. What I liked best was how quickly the service affected my style, which was based only on my style profile. I also liked that each box offers a complete outfit, while other services tend to include parts that may or may not fit together. Stylogic included a skirt, cardigan, top, pair of shoes, and a bracelet. The outfit matched my style and was still a bit adventurous.

A Stylogic box contains five items and you have seven days to try them on. There's a $ 20 styling fee for everything you keep, and if you don't keep anything, you only pay that fee. If you love your box and keep everything, you will get a 20% discount.

Every package from Trendy Butler contains at least two items of clothing from brands such as Eleven Paris, Civil Society, Zanerobe, WeSC and Superdry that you can use to expand your wardrobe. My husband's sample pack contained three items: a gray long-sleeved shirt, a dark blue button-down, and a pair of dark blue pants. The items could work together and easily integrate into his closet without stepping too far out of his comfort zone.

The packages cost $ 65 a month with no styling fee – you have to keep everything. The credit card in your account will be charged on the day you place your order and on the same day of the following month. Trendy Butler also has an online shop where you can buy certain items through your account.

If something doesn't work in your box, Trendy Butler offers member returns (no refunds) and exchanges through its support email. You must have received the items in the past 60 days, explain why the items are not working for Trendy Butler to improve your profile, and have the clothes in "unworn" condition with the tags on. If the items meet these criteria, you will receive a prepaid return label.
