The new Apple Watch SE may not offer the lowest price, but it offers better value on paper.

Apple

This story is part of Apple event, our full coverage of the latest news from Apple headquarters.

With the start of Apple Watch Series 6 and the Apple Watch SE, You now have even more options for your wrist and wallet. The Series 6 has a number of new features including the S6 processor and a sensor that allows you to measure your blood oxygen levels. The Watch SE is moving parts from series 3, 5 and 6 into a new, affordable version.

We saw Apple do something similar when it launched the iPhone SE earlier this year. It used the iPhone 8’s case and the iPhone 11 Pro’s processor, but it came priced at $ 399. It’s the cheapest new iPhone you can buy.

At $ 279 (£ 269, AU $ 429), the same can’t be said for the Apple Watch SE. That’s because you can still buy that Apple Watch Series 3 for $ 199 (£ 199, AU $ 299). You may be wondering what the Apple Watch SE is for.

Obviously, if you just look at the price, it will be tempting to save $ 80 and get the Series 3. But you would get a watch that was launched three years ago and with the same performance three years earlier than the Watch SE no longer has WatchOS updates.

The Watch SE also contains a more powerful processor than Apple’s older wearable device. Think of the SE as a Series 3 with a much-needed refresh inside. The Series 3 is powered by the S3 processor. Under the SE’s dial is an S5 processor that is 2x faster than the S3 and the same as in the Series 5. The newer processor makes the SE 2020 and more relevant in the future. For example, the series does not support 3 Apple’s new family setup plan This is a great way to set up an Apple Watch for your child, with parental controls for messaging and location tracking. The Apple Watch SE does it.

Then there is the display and the body. The Watch SE has a Retina display that is 30% larger than the Series 3. However, the Series 6 SE display is not turned on. The SE is available in silver, space gray and gold, while the Series 3 is only available in silver and space gray.

The SE also supports features such as fall detection and noise monitoring and is available in both cellular and non-cellular models. Apple only sells the Series 3 in a non-cellular version. However, you may find the Series 3 cellular version through other retailers.

The SE also has a compass, an always-on altimeter (the Series 3 has an altimeter, but it’s not always on), a second-generation optical sensor (the Series 3 has a first-generation sensor), and a W3 Chip for connecting accessories such as AirPods. The Series 3 has a W2 chip.

Ultimately, the Apple Watch SE seems to be the better value despite a higher price. But no one is going to shame you if you get a series 3.
