Sony has confirmed plans to hold an event for a brand new Xperia device this week. Scheduled for Thursday, September 17th, the Japanese company is a little shy about what exactly will be announced at the event. In fact, the only references on the invitation itself are the #SonyXperia social hashtag and the “Xperia New Product Announcement” tagline. Unlike Apple, which also hosts an online media event a few days earlier to showcase its latest iPhone (as well as a host of other gadgets) and always gives a few pointers (usually in the form of a play on words) about what we’re going to do during the Keynote, Sony holds its card very close to its chest.
The rest of the invitation to the Xperia event is captured with a series of blurry horizontal stripes. And that̵
According to sources, the Sony Xperia 5 II should be available for pre-order on September 17, 2020. Given that Sony is holding an Xperia-themed event that day, there’s a good chance that we will unleash the follow-up to the Xperia 5 during the event.
Like the Xperia 1 II (pronounced “Xperia One Mark 2”) before, Sony appears to be sticking to its new naming convention, taking inspiration from its line of best-selling cameras, adding a Roman numeral to the end of the brand name each year rather than all branding to change like its counterparts. This makes sense – after all, it is not immediately clear that the Samsung Galaxy S20 is the successor to the Galaxy S10 or that the iPhone 11 is the successor to the iPhone Xs.
Unlike the Xperia 1 II, this brand new handset will have a cheaper price point – something we had a real problem with during our time with the Xperia 1.
As with the first-generation Xperia 5, we expect a display with an aspect ratio of 21: 9. This is one of the key differentiators between Sony and its main competitors. According to Sony, the 21: 9 is better for watching movies and TV shows on the go because there are no black borders. If you hold the phone in portrait orientation, the big screen is perfect for stacking two apps to run at the same time.
Xperia 1 II review: By far the best Sony Xperia phone in years
Rumor has it that the 6.1-inch display on the Xperia 5 II will be upgraded to a 120 Hz panel. For those who don’t know, it means it updates twice as often as a standard 60Hz display – as is likely to be found on your current smartphone or TV. These highly updated displays make the operating system feel more responsive, animations look faster, and fast games feel even more hectic.
The Xperia 5 II is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 and a very generous 4,000 mAh battery. That should be more than enough to handle graphics-intensive games and side-by-side apps all day.
Of course, these are just rumors, so it is worth taking everything with a generous pinch of salt. Fortunately, it doesn’t take long to find out if these reports are true. Sony will hold its new Xperia product announcement on September 17, 2020 at 8 a.m. GMT / 9 a.m. CEST / 3 a.m. ET and 12 p.m. PT. Express.co.uk will have the latest information so stay tuned.
