The Google Play Store, the official Android app store, removed the Paytm app from its app list on Friday for violating its guidelines for sports betting.
The other Paytm apps such as Paytm for Business, Paytm Mall, Paytm Money, Paytm Mall Store Manager and Paytm Instore Manager are still available for download and installation.
The Paytm app, which has millions of active users using it for cashless transactions, has been removed “for violating the Play Store’s guidelines for sports betting,” Google said.
“The app was blocked for violating game guidelines. A clarification of our guidelines was released today before the IPL tournament,”
Paytm informed users on Friday via a tweet that the payment app is available again in the Google Play Store and is temporarily unavailable. Paytm said, “It will be back very soon. All your money is completely safe and you can continue to enjoy your Paytm app as usual. “
Google today published a blog post from Suzanne Frey, vice president of security and privacy at Android, explaining the guidelines for gambling apps.
“We don’t allow online casinos and we don’t support unregulated gambling apps that make sports betting easier. This also applies if an app takes consumers to an external website where they can take part in paid tournaments to win real money or cash prizes. This is against our guidelines, ”it says in the blog post.
The blog post stated that Google is asking the app’s developers to get it in compliance with their guidelines. Once that’s done, the app will be restored to the Play Store. If the developer does not follow these guidelines or if they continually violate these guidelines, Google may “terminate Google Play Developer accounts”.
Paytm app users can still use their app if it is installed on their phones. It is the sixth most downloaded fintech app according to Sensor Tower – a website that provides enterprise-level data on mobile apps and publishers.
Paytm has 450 million users and not only offers a payment app, but also functions such as online shopping, games and banking, and other services.
