Things that we take for granted on earth can be complicated in space. One example is going to the bathroom. The ISS has had a toilet on board since it was put into orbit. Over the years there have been problems with the room toilet. NASA is sending several pieces of equipment to the ISS this week aboard the Cygnus spacecraft due to launch on September 29th.
The private cargo spacecraft slated to take off from Virginia is literally loaded with fresh supplies for the space station, including a new space toilet, scientific instruments and Estée Lauder skin care products. We’re serious about the last one. The mission is known as Cygnus NG-14 and will bring 7,624 pounds of cargo to the space station.

This particular spaceship was named in honor of the astronaut of the same name, SS Kalpana Chawla, who was one of seven killed in the 2003 Columbia tragedy. The launch will be broadcast on NASA television on Tuesday at 10 p.m. EDT. There is plenty of food and water for the crew among the nearly 8,000 pounds of cargo going to the space station.
The toilet is officially called the Universal Waste Management System. The space toilet cost $ 23 million and was created with the help of astronauts. The new toilet is 65 percent smaller and 40 percent lighter than the toilet in the space station. It was specially developed for the female crew.
