According to data from research companies, people are increasingly buying mid-range Android devices through their higher quality alternatives. Strategy Analytics reports that the Samsung Galaxy A51 was the top-selling Android phone in the first three months of the year, followed by Xiaomi’s Redmi 8. The Galaxy S20 Plus was the only flagship in the company’s top 6 ranking, ranking third Space .
“As mobile operators have reduced subsidies in recent years and many countries are now going into recession after the virus, smartphone consumers worldwide are becoming more and more price-conscious,”
Current research from channels paints a similar picture, though the two don’t agree which mid-range Android phone has sold the most, possibly due to the different way they counted their phones. Canalys counts the Redmi Note 8 & 8T as a single device (which is essentially the case if the 8T does not support NFC) and places it first in front of the Galaxy A51. However, both agree that midrange models dominate Android phones.
It is not a completely new trend. Earlier reports said the 2019 best-selling Android phones were also cheaper models of the Galaxy A series and Xiaomi Redmi. Winter’s comments, however, suggest that the trend toward cheaper Android phones has continued this year and is accelerating for viruses due to the economy.
Apple seems to be the exception to the rule. Canalys describes the iPhone 11 as the best-selling phone in the first quarter of the year, with the iPhone 11 Pro Max and Pro ranking sixth and tenth, respectively. Now that Apple has made serious efforts to get back into a cheaper price range with the new iPhone SE, data for the next quarter could show that the price-sensitive trend is spreading to iOS.
