The new environmentally friendly boxes from Amazon offer an augmented reality experience

Amazon is celebrating Halloween while showing its environmentally conscious efforts this year.

Until October 31st, your Amazon packages will look a little different than usual. The eco-friendly boxes use less material than the previous boxes and have a large white pumpkin on the side that customers can draw any design they want and then bring it to life using the company̵

7;s augmented reality technology.

To do this, customers have to download the AR app from Amazon and scan the QR code on the box with their phone camera. Once the code is scanned, an animated replica of the drawing comes to life on the screen, much like Snapchat’s popular AR filters.

“The new experience is an inexpensive way for customers to party and a fun way to reuse cardboard boxes before they are thrown in the trash,” Amazon said in a statement.

The company hopes the concept of reusing the boxes (even just for Halloween fun) will draw attention to Amazon’s environmental initiatives. The project comes from Amazon’s 85-strong packaging team. The group is focused on improving packaging to use less waste and bring products to consumers.

And cardboard boxes make up a large proportion of the company’s product waste.

reported that Amazon shipped more than 5 billion items worldwide through Prime alone in 2017. All of this requires packaging material that is eventually thrown away. Hopefully initiatives like this Halloween project – and others – will help in the ongoing, very real fight against packaging waste.
