The OnePlus watch is still too nimble a target to know much about it. However, we may have just learned about one of the most important design elements.
Max J., a leaker who has regularly provided accurate information on OnePlus products, claims that the OnePlus Watch will have a round face in contrast to the segment-leading Apple Watch 5.
Max J. had tried the day before to publish this information with this tweet. Unfortunately, his picture was too subtle for his followers to understand, hence today’s clarification.
Many don̵7;t seem to understand, so I’ll clear it up. The clock is circular. WOTCH https://t.co/HkevfvMfgTSeptember 10, 2020
A round face means that OnePlus is aiming at a traditional watch or the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 rather than something more unique like the square Apple Watch or something that resembles a fitness tracker. Although the Apple Watch 6 is slated to be released next week at an event on September 15, the rumors don’t suggest Apple is switching to a circular design.
This also means that it bears no resemblance to the Oppo watch or the Vivo watch, the wearables offered by OnePlus colleagues under parent company BBK Electronics. Both use a rectangular rather than a round design, although that doesn’t mean they don’t share components and functionality with OnePlus.
For example its processor and operating system. The Oppo Watch runs on a Snapdragon Wear 3100 and Google’s Wear OS, and while we would expect any newly released smartwatch to use the Snapdragon Wear 4100 chipset, the operating system would likely stay the same.
In 2020, OnePlus significantly expanded its product range. Not only did we see the OnePlus Nord being a brand new mid-range phone from the company, but also the debut of OnePlus Buds, the company’s first true wireless earbuds.
We expect the OnePlus 8T, a mid-life update to the existing OnePlus 8, to be available around October if the schedules of previous years are followed. OnePlus could therefore take the opportunity to show off the watch too, if it is ready. Otherwise, the next event we can predict for OnePlus will likely be next April for the OnePlus 9 series.
