Sony updated the PS5 website to go over a number of features that we had a little clarity on but not as much as we do now.
In terms of backward compatibility, Sony goes so far as to allow us to “play a back catalog of PS4 games on your PS5 console”. It then states that a “Game Boost” feature ensures that some PS4 and PS VR games run at a higher and more consistent frame rate.

Regarding the website’s Smart Delivery service, it states that publishers have the option to upgrade disc and digital PS4 games to digital PS5 games (either for free or for a fee). The website goes on to say that you must keep your PS4 disc in the console even if you downloaded the digital PS5 version. It is also confirmed that all-digital PS5 users will not be able to upgrade to the PS5 version if they own the PS4 disc.
The website also confirms that the latest PlayStation VR headset is required, as well as the PS4 PlayStation camera, although we will need a PlayStation camera adapter (which is provided through redemption at no additional cost).

Upgrade PS4 Games to PS5 Digital Games
The PS5 console allows game makers to upgrade their disc and digital PS4 games to digital PS5 games.
The upgrade may be offered at no additional cost or for a fee and may be available for a limited time. If players have a PS4 game on Blu-ray Disc, they will need to insert the PS4 game disc to view the upgrade path, download the PS5 version, and insert the PS4 game disc each time they get the PS5 version of the game play. To upgrade eligible PS4 disc titles to PS5 digital versions, players must have a PS5 console with a disc drive.
PlayStation VR integration
Connect your PlayStation VR to your PS5 console to enjoy supported PS VR games. To set up your PS VR with your PS5 console, you’ll need your PlayStation camera2 for PS4 and a PlayStation camera adapter (no purchase required). More information on how to request an adapter will be posted on PlayStation.com, when available.
