The PS5 is so expensive to manufacture that Sony may sell it at a loss

The new PlayStation seems to be giving Sony a few headaches as components are said to push up the price of the console. It also doesn't help to wait for Microsoft to price your console.

According to a Bloomberg report, the current unit cost of the PS5 is around $ 450, which would push the console's retail price down nearly $ 100 more than its predecessor. The company has problems getting enough DRAM and flash memory, which is already in great demand from smartphone manufacturers. The cooling system of the console is also said to be more expensive than is typical for the machines. If Sony wanted to match the price of its current console, it would have to sell the PS5 at a loss.

The DRAM shortage goes beyond the PS5; Due to the limited memory supply, the company had to discard some functions of an upcoming mirrorless camera.

So far we had only heard about the price of the PS5 that Sony apparently was waiting for Microsoft to pull the Xbox Series X trigger first (which I will start calling the XSX, by the way, pronounced "excess" ). That seemed like an understandable, if rather underhanded strategy ̵

1; the price was an important factor at the beginning of the last generation of consoles and gave the PS4 an early lead over the XB1.

But if this is a game with chickens, then someone is going to have to lose. And depending on the price of the XSX components, Sony may have to make the decision to make the console more expensive and to damn the consequences. The XSX has a kind of integrated backup. Microsoft said there are no exclusive consoles in the first year – this tells me that the company expects early sales to be slow and is likely to bet on them. [19659002] On the other hand, Sony can also rely on revenues like PS Plus and PS Now to carry the PS5 when it has to be sold at a loss, so the same can be said about it. The Bloomberg report also claims that executives expect a gradual generation change and that many next-generation games will be playable on PS4. It would be nice to hear that Sony would finally play a pony and show us more next generation games.

In both cases, the clock is ticking for both companies – the consoles will be available for sale in less than a year. At some point, loss or no loss, we have to hear a number – every number.
