At 2.76 pounds (for the Core i5 version we received), the Laptop 2 is exactly the same weight as its predecessor. It's also about as light as the new Retina Display MacBook Air and the Dell XPS 13 without a touchscreen.
The bright, beautiful 13.5-inch display of Notebook 2 shows every last detail, even in the darkest scenes in The Spook of Hill House . In hard light, however, the screen became a little hard to see. The speakers were loud and clear enough to hear the ghosting creaking and squealing sounds, so I dived into the show.
I also like that Microsoft brought a USB A jack, a Mini DisplayPort and a headphone jack. This is more than most competitors' notebooks, but charging USB-C is a blatant failure. Instead of a charging port that is compatible with the cable for your phone and most other devices, you get the proprietary Surface Power port just like the previous Surface Laptop and Book. Worse, the socket is so flat that the charger fell out of the laptop at the slightest provocation. Sure, it has magnets that help keep it in place, but that was not enough to protect the charger from falling out when I accidentally flicked the wire. It's like MagSafe, but a little flickerier. That was almost annoying enough to be a deal breaker for me, but the Surface Laptop 2 has enough in its favor that I can overlook it.
The keys themselves are not only at a good distance and comfortable to type but also quieter than before. The sound is muffled as if Microsoft stuffed a pillow under each key. This is not a significant improvement, but nice if you want to do your job without disturbing your neighbors.
I was also impressed with the glass-covered trackpad of Laptop 2. It's smooth, appealing, spacious and, frankly, a pleasure to use. I switched between virtual desktops and apps with three fingers, flipped through two fingers, and zoomed in on the pictures without delaying or expiring the room. Performance and Battery Life
The original laptop was shipped with Windows 10 S, which ultimately held back the potential of this machine. Microsoft later made it possible to upgrade to the full version at no extra cost. However, you must manually install the operating system. This time Microsoft has thankfully chosen Windows 10 Home and freed the notebook from its limited app choice. Our test device has an eighth-generation Intel Core i5 CPU with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD, which was very powerful for most of my daily work routine. These typically include dozens of browser search and review tabs, as well as the Faststone Photo Resizer for batch processing and watermarks.
The laptop 2 took about 11 seconds to stack a set of ten photos, which is the same as the eighth, -genuine Core i5 machines that I tested. The performance of benchmarks like PCMark, Geekbench 4 and 3DMark also falls in the range of comparable PCs and indeed surpasses the original laptop, though not very much.
The laptop 2 has also performed well in daily use. It did not stutter as I paced between the virtual desktops, opened App for App, played browser games, and installed Steam. Once there was a problem after repeatedly trying to lock and unlock it, but that was the only hiccup I've seen so far. Microsoft's claim that laptop 2 is 85 percent faster than the original is probably marketing hype. does not feel 85 percent faster, but still humming along smoothly.
I was also impressed with how quickly laptop 2 woke up and logged me in via Windows Hello. The device generally came out of sleep mode in less than a second and was smart enough to spot me from different angles.
It is designed for the same battery life of 14 hours as its predecessor, but the laptop 2 actually surpassed the original In our battery test, we confront after just under 16 hours. Not only is this longer than the 14.5-hour result of the first laptop, it's also better than the XPS 13 (2018) and this year's MacBook Air with Retina Display. As much as I do not like the proprietary charging port, Microsoft's charger rejuvenates the laptop 2 pretty quickly – I went up to 35 percent after about half an hour.
