Samsung PM1643 15 TB SSD – $ 2,395.91 on Amazon
This high-performance drive from Samsung has fallen dramatically in price and is now available for under $ 2,400. That might still sound expensive, but 15TB is a serious amount of SSD storage!
Five years is a very long time in technology, but it has been a long time since Samsung introduced its groundbreaking PM1643a SSD line of 15.36TB capacity.
Since then, the average price of this capacity model has fallen steadily, but has recently fallen like a leader, as the Nimbus Data ExaDrive NL shows.
You can buy the drive now on Amazon for just $ 2,395.91, which is far cheaper than the $ 2,900 on the 16TB Nimbus model.
At just under $ 156 per TB, the Samsung drive is less than twice as expensive as the entry-level price for consumer SSDs. This is a very tempting proposition for those looking to consolidate a dozen 1TB SSDs, for example.
But this drive is an entirely different animal; The usual SATA connection is not used, but the SAS interface for companies.
Samsung claims that the PM1643 MZILT15THMLA-00007 can achieve random read / write speeds of up to 400K / 50K IOPS with sequential read / write speeds of 2.1 and 1.7 Gbps, respectively.
It is aimed at data centers and comes with a five-year warranty with a recommended maximum write speed of one drive per day (essentially a petabyte per month) that is far superior to any consumer-facing drive.
It is based on Samsung’s 3rd generation 256 Gigabit (Gb) V-NAND technology, which enables cell arrays to be stacked in 48 layers.
Note that although the drive is the standard width (2.5 inches), it is far thicker than the usual 9.5 mm.
