Supercells mobile games, clash of clans and Clash Royale, are massive: together, according to the developer, the pair have been downloaded more than 3 billion times. Now the Finnish studio is bringing them together with a new one collision animated short film, a 12-minute piece called Lost & crowned. It’s beautiful and fun, but also part of a larger strategy to make the overarching fantasy world bigger and more enticing. “When it comes to storytelling, we think it’s important to go beyond what’s in the games,”
This isn’t technically the first animated short set in the clash of clans Universe. This distinction goes on Clash-a-rama, a YouTube series created by a trio of Simpsons Authors who debuted back in 2016. Lee says the series was a huge hit, especially when it came to expanding the fictional world of collision. The games themselves have very little narration and focus almost entirely on combat. But Clash-a-rama showed what the characters were doing in their spare time, adding a newfound depth to this world. It got Supercell to do something even bigger.
“While Clash-a-rama It was a huge hit, we always saw it as extraordinary fanfiction and we decided it was time to tell Supercell’s take on the world and the characters, so we set out to make this animated short, ”says Lee. This original series featured a bright and approachable 2D art style Lost & crowned has a 3D look that goes better with the games and CG commercials and trailers. One look and it’s clear it’s in the collision Universe.
It was developed in collaboration with the animation and design studio Psyops. The studio previously worked on one with Riot League of Legends in short, and it even turned a Travel Oregon commercial into a Studio Ghibli-style anime clip – and Lee says the main goal, aside from bridging the world of Clash Royale and clash of clansshould focus on a character-based narrative. “One of the driving principles behind our team is making our characters feel like real people, especially people you can relate to,” she says. “This relativity is really the key for us.”
This type of storytelling is a trend among popular multiplayer games. Title like Overwatch and League of Legends There’s not a lot of storytelling in the actual game, but there are plenty of animated shorts, comics, and other content working out their fictional worlds. Lee leads a three-person team that focuses solely on this type of external storytelling collision. And while Supercell isn’t ready to announce anything beyond that yet Lost & crownedIt’s not difficult to foresee a future where more animated clips or even things like comics will be further elaborated collisionFantasy realm. “We are in the process of evaluating other storytelling options,” says Lee.
