trill was ready to take advantage of a possible TikTok ban in the US. While that may not be the case now, given the obvious Oracle deal, the chaos surrounding TikTok has raised awareness of alternative apps like Triller. As TikTok Users were looking for a new home – or at least hedging their bets in the event of a complete ban – Triller’s app shot up the App Store charts. At some point it even became number 1 in 80 different countries, says Triller CEO Mike Lu. At Techcrunch Disrupt 2020 today, Lu spoke about Triller’s growing potential and what makes its app unique. He also delved into Triller̵
Lu also noted that another top TikToker, Addison Rae, will also be coming to Triller this week.
Although Triller has often positioned itself as a different type of app than TikTok, the company has continuously worked to incorporate the same influencers that made TikTok so popular. TikTok star Josh Richards recently joined Triller as an investor and chief strategy officer, even though he was only 18, for example. Other TikTok stars, Noah Beck and Griffin Johnson, also came to Triller earlier this summer.
And just this week Triller caught TikTok’s queen Charli D’Amelio, whose current TikTok account has 87 million followers.
Although Triller often benefits from influencers setting up their own accounts, Lu confirmed that Triller reached out to D’Amelio to help build the relationship and learn how the company can help her establish a different type of presence in the Triller business. Creating app.
The terms of the contract were not disclosed, but Lu said, “Until a month ago, we had never paid anyone to make a video.”
TikTok stars aren’t the only notable newcomers. Last month, Donald Trump also launched his own official Triller account to promote his political campaign.
Lu said he welcomes all new users, including Trump.
“We are an open platform and we really strive for creativity. We welcome everyone – whether you are on the left or right side of the fence – to express yourself on the Trill platform, ”he said. “It’s very exciting for Triller to see some of the world’s leading companies, as well as some of the world’s biggest influencers, join the platform.”
Lu also explained how Triller differs from the wider range of social media apps, noting that older social networks have mainly focused on allowing users to post status updates rather than creative content.
Triller’s identity, Lu added, “has always been music, content and creative discovery.”
“I think we will always shine more than your traditional status updates – which I think has done the world of Facebook, Instagram and Twitter really well,” he said. But today’s users “really don’t publish creative content on these old platforms anymore,” he continued. “They actually post them on platforms like us, where they’re looking for an expressive and creative outlet.”
Lu claimed Triller also benefited from attempting by older social networks to enter the short-form video room.
When Instagram launched its TikTok competitor Reels, Triller saw usage increase by 20%, Lu said.
“We found that a lot of users waiting for roles saw what it was. And they decided to stick with Triller, ”he said.
On business matters, Lu declined to discuss recent reports of the alleged billion dollar valuation, but confirmed that Triller is in the process of raising funds. He also declined to talk about the status of Triller’s reported $ 20 billion offer at Centricus for TikTok assets, but said the company would have been a good home for content from TikTok creators from an infrastructure standpoint.
With Triller’s potential growth amid TikTok concerns, it wasn’t surprising that Lu also supported the idea that TikTok could pose a security threat to US users.
“Given the sensitivity of the data [and] The amount of data they collect poses a national risk, ”Lu said of TikTok. “This is a Chinese owned company. The data is probably not here in the US … “he added, apparently refuting TikTok’s claims that the US data is on US servers.
“We take this stuff very seriously. We’re a US-based company, ”he said, noting Triller complaining about US regulations like COPPA. “We are very proud that we are committed to this [Triller] by the right standards that we are used to and the privacy of our users and our citizens, ”said Lu.
