Cupra has confirmed that it is developing a hotter version of the Formentor SUV – and prototype footage suggests it will have a five-cylinder, nearly 400 horsepower engine.
The Spanish brand, formerly a subdivision of Seat, has just launched the Formentor with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo gasoline engine with 306 hp and a plug-in hybrid drive train with 242 hp. However, it seems that the cast won’t stop there.
In a statement sent to Autocar, Cupra has officially confirmed that it is “Considering a more powerful version of Formentor, this is the ultimate expression of the high performance of the CUPRA brand. “

Cupra recently registered the name Formentor with the acronym VZ. Rumor has it that it could be used as a top performance model just like the RS emblem by Audi – although it was also used for a limited Formentor of the “VZ Edition”.
The only five-cylinder in the Volkswagen Group’s stable is the 2.5-liter engine from Audi, which is used in the RS Q3, RS3 and TT RS. It puts out 394 horsepower in these cars, and it’s likely that power will be maintained for a potential Cupra flagship.
The currently fastest Formentor, the 2.0 TFSI, reaches a speed of 0 to 62 km / h in 4.9 seconds and a top speed of 250 km / h. While the top speed of a five-cylinder flagship would likely be similarly capped, we’d expect the time to drop from 0 to 62 mph to around 4.0 seconds.
