Of course, buses are used a lot, and with that use comes a lot of wear and tear, even with things like batteries. So what happens to an electric bus battery when it has reached the end of its life? This answer used to be a bit nebulous, but now, according to an announcement made on Thursday, those old batteries are about to get a new life.
But what are they good for if they are not good enough for use in a vehicle? Well, all sorts of things as it turns out. Volvo is working with a company called Batteryloop to convert the old bus batteries into energy storage for buildings (ala, but possibly larger) and for EV charging stations.
“We are pleased and proud that Batteryloop has the opportunity to purchase the used batteries and to develop this solution together with Volvo Buses. In addition to reuse, under the agreement we also guarantee safe and environmentally friendly recycling when the batteries are over The end is Second Life as energy storage. We are thus offering a sustainable circular solution for Volvo Buses batteries. Furthermore, this collaboration means that we can convert costs into a source of income for the customer, “said Rasmus Bergström, President of Batteryloop, in a statement.
Finding uses for out-of-service electric vehicle batteries is only becoming a major problem as the global acceptance of electric vehicles increases. Therefore, it is incredibly important to have an infrastructure in place that is set up not only for further use, but ultimately for recycling as well, once they are truly dead. This program seems like a good step in the right direction.
