Watch DVDs and Blu-rays in Windows 10 for free in just a few steps.
Step 1: Get a floppy drive
If you find that your PC or laptop does not have a drive to play your DVD or computer has Blu-ray in, you're not alone. Many PCs, and especially laptops, are no longer shipped with a DVD drive for reasons of space and cost. Even for those who do, it is unlikely that a Blu-ray drive is built in. Fortunately, many manufacturers have solved this problem by developing a variety of external and optical add-in drives in all shapes and sizes to help with scratching the physical media.
The Easiest Drive That Can Be Used Is An External Drive You can plug it in whenever you need it and put it away when it is not needed. Depending on whether you want to burn your own DVD / Blu-ray discs (often described as or or ), the price for a DVD drive can range between $ 20 and $ 40, and between $ 50 and $ 50 and $ 100 for a Blu-ray drive. Drives that can play DVDs or write to Blu-rays are usually at the lower end of the spectrum.
Most external optical drives, no matter what they play, and whether they write or not, use a USB cable to connect to your PC or laptop. Make sure it's the right type for your system. If your laptop has only USB C ports, you may need to purchase an adapter.
If you are using a desktop and prefer not to mess with external drives, you can always install an internal drive. The prices are comparable with external drives for DVD and Blu-ray players. However, you should first know how to assemble a computer because you will need an additional SATA cable and a power cable for the drive. You should also make sure that you have enough space for a new optical drive in your case.
Step 2: Download VLC
Once you have an optical drive, all you need is some software.
There are a number of applications that can help you play a DVD or Blu-ray on Windows, but VLC is our favorite. It's open source, well tested and most of all free. Download it from the official website and install it like any other application.
Step 3: Play the Disc
Open VLC, if it is not & # 39; t already. Then make sure your drive is connected (if external) and insert the DVD or Blu-ray Disc. The VLC should automatically detect the disc and start playback as if you were watching it on a DVD or Blu-ray player connected to a TV. If this does not work, play it manually in the VLC by switching to Media > Open Disk . If necessary, select the drive in question from the drop-down menu and press Play .
Note: If you still have problems playing the DVD or Blu-ray, you may need to do so. Set the region of your drive to the disc you want to view. To do this, enter Device Manager in the Windows 10 search bar and select the corresponding result. Locate your DVD / Blu-ray drive in the list, right-click (or tap and hold) and select Properties . Select the Region tab and use the menu to select your country. Keep in mind that this is possible only a limited number of times.
