What we know about Apple’s iPhone 12, its 5G technology, and the cost in Australia

After delays due to disruptions related to pandemics, the latest model from Apple’s biggest seller – the iPhone – was unveiled at a launch that heralded the device’s new 5G connectivity capability.

In September, Apple CEO Tim Cook presented the technology giant’s virtual fitness service and a bundle of all subscriptions called Apple One.

But fans of the company’s smartphones had asked what the next-generation iPhone would bring.

Here are the Top five takeaways from the start.

The iPhone 12 supports 5G technology, but Aussies won̵
7;t see those speeds for some time

5G is a new technical standard for wireless networks that promises faster speeds and less lag when connecting to the network, as well as the ability to Connect multiple devices to the internet without blocking it.

Ideally, 5G networks can also handle more users, many sensors, and heavy traffic better.

All four newly announced iPhone 12 models can use 5G wireless data networks, although almost all of Apple’s competitors, including Samsung, already have 5G models on store shelves.

US models support the millimeter wave 5G, a much higher frequency promising data speeds more than 100 times faster than 4G, as well as support for lower frequency bands.

Millimeter waves are not yet available in Australia, but telecommunications companies will be able to bid for part of the millimeter wave spectrum in March 2021.

You will not receive a charger or headphones for future iPhone purchases

Apple will not include a charger or headphones with any future iPhone purchases reduce their environmental impact.

Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president of environmental, political and social initiatives, said there are already more than 700 million Lightning headphones and more than 2 billion Apple power supplies worldwide.

She also pointed out that those numbers don’t count the billions of third-party adapters and wireless headphone adoption.

The decision was made with mixed reviews on-line, Many people are skeptical about using a USB-C cable:

The iPhone 12 offers a new feature for clumsy smartphone users

Broken iPhone screens can be expensive to replace, but a new “ceramic shield” screen on the latest models could be the antidote.

Apple boasted that the ceramic shield was harder than any smartphone glass.

What is a ceramic sign and how does it work? Kaiann Drance, vice president of marketing at Apple, said:

“Ceramic Shield goes beyond glass by adding a new high temperature crystallization step where nanoceramic crystals grow in the glass matrix to dramatically improve toughness.

“To make this material both tough and optically clear, we precisely control the type of crystals and the degree of crystallinity.”

Apple has also launched a mini version of its smart speaker

The HomePod Mini is a smaller smart speaker priced at $ 149 (compared to its larger equivalent of $ 469).

It will compete with offers from market leaders Amazon and Googlethat dominate the room.

By comparison, Amazon’s third-generation Echo Dot is currently selling for $ 26.69.

However, Ben Bajarin, lead analyst for consumer market intelligence at research firm Creative Strategies, said Apple had concretized its vision of how its devices could interact more directly with its own speakers than its competitors.

For example, Apple customers can speak into their iPhone or iPad to use the HomePod Minis like an intercom.

“Google or Amazon, especially Amazon, cannot do that cleanly,” he said.

How much does the iPhone 12 cost in Australia?

As always, a lot more than the widespread US price.

These are the four new models being offered to Australians:

  • The iPhone 12 Mini ($ 1,199)
  • The iPhone 12 ($ 1,349)
  • The iPhone 12 Pro (starting at $ 1,699)
  • The iPhone 12 Pro Max (starting at $ 1,849)

By comparison, the Samsung Galaxy S20 costs between $ 999 and $ 1,999, and Google’s newly released 5G Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a are priced at $ 999 and $ 799, respectively.

The cost of the iPhone 12 and the return to the flat-edged design led many to joke that it was just a reproduction of the iPhone 5, only with better cameras.
