President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden hosted competing town hall events Thursday night, but the star of the show may have been … none of the candidates. ABC host George Stephanopoulous hosted a city hall event with Biden in Philadelphia, while NBC’s Savannah Guthrie hosted one with the president in Miami. However, social media focused on a woman in the Trump event audience who nodded her head frequently and emphatically as the president spoke.
The audience, who wore a red face mask, was nicknamed “Nodding Lady” by many viewers. Neither Trump nor Guthrie addressed their presence, but the online comment flew.
Nodding Lady has been compared to other viral moments including theduring his debate with Sen. Kamala Harris and “Left Shark” from the 2015 Super Bowl halftime show. “Nodding Lady is the Left Shark of 2020,” wrote a Twitter user.
Journalist Katie Couric and comedian Sarah Cooper were among those who commented on the Nodding Lady. “I’m surfing the channel,” tweeted Couric. “The woman to the right of @realDonaldTrump keeps nodding her head, which I find very distracting.”
At the time of going to press, the woman had not been identified, but many viewers wanted to know her story while others thought she should be left alone.
The bow tie that sat on the Vice President’s heada few days later. Will Nodding Lady make it into an SNL sketch? “Nodding Lady will be at SNL this week … and probably a Halloween costume next week,” wrote one Twitter user.
Although the dueling town halls replaced a second presidential debate, stay tuned. Trump and Biden are expected to debate again on October 22nd.
