Apple has announced a new version of the iPad Air. While all the attention was focused on the iPhone 12 series this week, Apple has also announced an upgrade to one of its most successful tablets that brings the same next-generation chipset as the phone.
The “brand new” iPad Air runs on the A14 Bionic chip, which Apple calls the most advanced. This state-of-the-art chip is hidden under a larger 10.9-inch liquid retina display that contains 3.8 million pixels, P3-wide color support, full lamination, True Tone and an anti-reflective coating. A TouchID fingerprint sensor is built into the power button, leaving more of the front of the device free for the display.
The A14 bionic chip has a whopping 11.8 billion transistors, six cores and, thanks to the quad-core graphics processor, can achieve an increase in CPU performance of up to 40 percent and graphics performance of 30 percent compared to the previous generation. Also inside the A14 Bionic is a 16-core neural engine that can perform 11 trillion operations per second and offers state-of-the-art machine learning and artificial intelligence functions.
The 7-megapixel front camera is now flanked by a 12-megapixel rear camera taken from the high-end iPad Pro. This means that the iPad Air is suitable for 4K videos for the first time. There is a pair of stereo front speakers for audio when used in landscape orientation. WiFi 6, improved LTE and even a 5 Gbit / s USB-C port. iPadOS14 on the new iPad Air offers a number of features to take advantage of the power of the A14 Bionic chip. The new iPad Air works with both Apple’s Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil.
As with all Apple products these days, the company is keen to celebrate the green credentials of the new iPad Air: the case is made from 100% recycled aluminum, the solder is made from 100% recycled tin, and the speakers use magnets made from 100% recycled rare earth metals .
