In this year of our shared pandemic trauma, the holidays are difficult. That’s why Trip to Batuu, the newest extension for The Sims 4arrives at the perfect time.
Before COVID-19 kept us all trapped in our homes, I dreamed of planning a trip to Disney World’s new Star Wars theme park, Galaxy’s Edge. I convinced my partner, hired a group of friends, and worked out a babysitting plan for a child who is a few years away from appreciating such a trip. We were all ready to leave in 2021 once the much-touted resort opened.
Needless to say, none of this is happening now. Those of us who trust science are all huddled in our little pandemic pods, waiting for the nightmare to end. So it was a welcome surprise when Electronic Arts revealed the new Star Wars theme in late August Sims 4 Expansion and soon confirmed that the vacation space was indeed modeled after Galaxy̵
“When we were talking about our next game package, Galaxy’s Edge was just opening and we felt it fits in really well with the Sims gaming experience,” main producer Antonio Romero said in a recent interview.
The team at The Sims 4 Developer Maxis already knew her fans like Star Wars. Free updates in 2016 and 2019 – with classic character looks and a Mandalorians– Inspired decorative “Baby Yoda” statue – was very well received. And now came Galaxy’s Edge, that fully realized Star Wars theme park experience with lore and a story of its own, but only a few outlets where that story was evident.
“Galaxy’s Edge [had] was only explored through the park itself and maybe through a few comics, so it was nice to have our chance to blow out that lore and expand the stories further with [Galaxy’s Edge mainstay characters] Hondo Ohnaka and Lieutenant Agnon. “
Trip to Batuu Adds the tools you need to add a little Star Wars to your Sims story.
That was the idea that Maxis brought to Disney through Lucasfilm. It worked. The Star Wars rights holder has opted out and Trip to Batuu was born. For fans of The Sims 4It is immediately apparent that this is something else. Romero said it was in some ways comparable to the 2019 expansion. StrangerVille.
“It was a single linear story where you explored this world and understood the strange conspiracy that was going on,” he explained. “We saw that people really enjoyed this type of narrative experience, so we felt like it Trip to Batuu was a chance for us to blow that out even further. “
The Star Wars package is similarly steeped in history, but offers players the (non-permanent) choice of joining one of three factions: Resistance, First Order, or Smuggler. Whichever you choose, your contact in the faction offers repeatable missions that can be used to earn Galactic Credits (Batuus currency) and other extras.
It’s not a completely different game, of course. They do not take part in space dogfights or actively control lightsaber duels. These are still Sims, so you interact with the world and the characters in it in the same way. The handful of missions that will take you off the planet unfold in text boxes, and you make simple decisions along the way.
But these are the Sims. This is an easy-to-use game for all ages with a focus on creativity and role-playing. “It’s a little less open [than] The Sims, but we know players need a little help from time to time to tell their story, “said Romero.
For people like me, the real thrill of flying away The Sims 4The version by Batuu offers the opportunity to get to know Disney Park without leaving home. The three Batuu neighborhoods in the game are all based on the Black Spire Outpost and the surrounding areas at Galaxy’s Edge.
It’s still a fictional place, not a virtual replica of the theme park. But you can get food (and learn recipes from in-game!) From Ronto’s Roaster. You can get junk, decorations, and your very own robot buddy through the Droid Depot. And if at some point you get all the parts you need to make a lightsaber, you can build it in Savi’s workshop.
These are all of the actual Galaxy’s Edge locations as well. In addition, the visit to the IRL Park and the start of your personal Star Wars adventure will be implemented virtually Trip to Batuu invites players to come in, hang out, and do their Sims thing.
“The biggest thing about The Sims is that players can tell their own stories in this quirky world,” said Romero. “And then Trip to Batuu adds the tools you need to add a little Star Wars to this story. “
Trip to Batuu is now available on all supporting platforms The Sims 4.
