Many of us rely on Zoom video calls to safely interact with friends and family during the pandemic. Zoom accounts could be more secure, however, and this is becoming more and more secure today with the introduction of two-factor authentication (2FA) for all accounts.
Zoom sees 2FA as a number of benefits that go beyond being more secure. According to its own statements, Zoom offers companies in particular improved compliance, easier management of login information and lower costs. Because the 2FA feature is free, Zoom believes it will be of particular use to schools that rely on their video service for distance learning. Previously, they had to pay for a separate single sign-on service.
The additional level of security can come from one of three sources. The first is an authentication app like Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, or FreeOTP. Alternatively, a one-time code can be sent via SMS or phone call.
To use 2FA, it must be activated for an account. This can be done by logging into the Zoom dashboard. Navigate in the menu to Advanced> Security and activate the option “Log in with two-factor authentication”. Then three options are available: all users, users with certain roles and users belonging to a certain group. Select the option that best suits your application and click “Save” to confirm the new settings. Afterwards a code is required as a second form of identification for all persons who log into this Zoom account.
